The mandate of the Center¡¦s research program has been to provide a solid scientific foundation for the utilization of complementary and alternative medicine by integrating questions of safety, efficacy, mechanism and validity of complementary medicine theories and practices into the established University Medical Center research program.

It has pursued its mission through the formation and continuing encouragement of interdisciplinary research collaborations reaching outside the Medical School boundaries to recognized scientists in the general George Washington University community, regional hospitals and research laboratories, and to local practitioners of alternative medicine. Research is currently supported by both the Medical Center and the National Institutes of Health.

The role of the Center¡¦s Research Committee is to keep interested scientists apprised of technical and scientific collaborative opportunities, and financial (private foundations, industry, and government) support opportunities for their ideas.
